In May, a combination of a cultural centre, bookstore and café opened in the Põhjala factory area in Kopli. The REad bookshop has long been located in the Old Town, but now the enthusiastic book lover should hop on the tram and head to North Tallinn. You’ll find a wide selection of affordable books in the sleek industrial hall, while enjoying the coffees and pastries that have made by legendary Café Kiosk.
In addition, the cultural centre AnkruSAAL will bring various events to the location. This bookstore combines café and culture in a relaxed way, and attracts visitors for a longer stay.
REad offers a living-room-like bookshop experience
The bookshop at the back of the Põhjala factory, on Ankru street side, is great. On the walls of the large factory building, a rows of books reaches for the sky. Light pours in through the large windows and the smell of fresh coffee fills the air. The first thing that catches your eye is the back wall of the bookshop, where you’ll find a huge artwork made of books. An impressive work of art has been created by using the colour scheme of the books. It encapsulates the knowledge, stories and experiences that can be contained within the covers of books in a tangible way.
On either side of the artwork you will find a huge selection of books in many languages. You can walk along the walls on two floors. There is literature to suit all tastes, including many English-language detective stories for holiday reading for a few euros. It’s worth taking a moment to browse the selection.
Sit down and enjoy the books and delicacies of Café Kiosk
There are several seating areas at the front of the industrial hall, where you can enjoy the Kiosk’s delicious freshly baked pastries and freshly roasted coffees. In good weather, the sunny terrace also offers plenty of space. We recommend you try Kiosk’s sinfully good savoury pies, which you can also buy to take home.
There is also a performance stage at the back of the space. The bookshop often hosts a variety of events, including live music. This combination of bookstore, café and cultural centre is a wonderfully relaxing place where the atmosphere is just right. Open an engaging book, grab a cup of hot coffee and a fresh pastry and enjoy the urban atmosphere!
