It’s not easy to stumble upon this restaurant situated next to Kadriorg Park. However, word has spread and the restaurant’s tables fill up with diners, especially on weekends, since the food at Mantel & Korsten is excellent and definitely one of Tallinn’s top restaurants..
Same owner as the legendary restaurant Moon
The high level of quality is not surprising, as the restaurant is founded by the same people who created the legendary Moon restaurant. Mantel & Korsten is easily recognisable in the green wooden building because of its impressive chimney.
There is no prominent logo or sign outside. In the neighbouring yard, a little girl walks her guinea pigs and the area is very cosy and peaceful. The district is built around the Kadriorg Palace, built by the Russian Emperor Peter the Great, and is a prestigious residential area. It is surrounded by beautiful houses and lush parks, the largest of which is of course the park surrounding the Kadriorg Palace.
The restaurant’s interior is colourful
The first thing that catches your eye when you walk through the door of Mantel & Korsten is the spectacular floral wallpaper and checkered windows. Autumn light floods in and the restaurant, almost empty in the last moments of the lunch hour, still looks inviting and warm. The menu is made up of classic dishes, which the restaurant has adapted to its own unique style.
The starters include, for example, lamb soup seasoned in the Georgian style. The soup was full of flavours from fresh root vegetables and herbs. The full-bodied soup was accompanied by house focaccia and caramelised butter with soy and balsamic vinegar. The butter was excellent and so was the soup.
Although the soup was listed as an appetizer, it was very filling and hearty. The menu also includes a Tar Tar menu with one vegan option. There are also a few pasta dishes. There is a selection of main courses to suit all tastes. The menu includes goose, swordfish and scallops. Meat options include rib eye steak and a few vegetarian options. The dessert menu includes traditional dishes such as lemon tart.
The restaurant’s wine list is extensive and the skilled sommelier can recommend the right wine to go with your meal. Mantel & Korsten is open for lunch, after which it closes for a while to prepare for dinner. From 5.30pm onwards, the restaurant welcomes you for dinner.
The distance from the centre of Tallinn to the restaurant is a couple of kilometres. The best way to get there is to take trams 1 and 3, which stop next to Kadriorg Park. It’s worth combining a trip to the restaurant with a visit to the palace and the park, or a visit to the KUMU art museum.
